Psalm 119:33-40 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.
Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. It is interesting that the last 4 words are there: …with all my heart. Often once we are walking with the Lord for a while we may not have trouble with sin outwardly, but we still sin in our hearts. Whether that be with pride, secrets thoughts or lusts, or selfishness. How many times does this particular Psalm say something like “I hide your word in my heart” or something to that effect?
Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
Our hearts are our biggest problem, that is likely why we are warned to guard our heart.
Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Now look down a few sentences in the Psalm passage… Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
Again He addresses our heart and then adds the eyes. We are easily distracted by what we see aren’t we? It doesn’t stop there just mentioning our heart and eyes, each of these points draw us back to the Word in each sentence as the solution to the problem with our heart and eyes. His Word is the solution for everything.
So there you have it! We have the solution for everything laying on our desk or nightstand, or on our phone. But how often do we reach for that solution? Sometimes it isn’t a matter of looking up an answer to a specific problem we are facing in our lives. But instead it is a matter of regrounding our heart in the Word of God so that we have wisdom and see the situation more clearly and through His eyes. Today let us reach for His Word as often as we can.
Lord, thank you for your word and that is the solution to everything I face. Help me to reach for your Word often. Holy Spirit remind me to reach for your Word throughout the day today. Lead me in hiding the Word in my heart and help me to obey with all of my heart. Show me the areas of my heart that need to be surrendered to you and transform and heal those areas today. Forgive me for the sin I have allowed in my heart. Thank you so much for your forgiveness and your power to transform!
