Don’t get too sweet on this world, -meaning don’t get too attached. This world is fading away and we can’t take anything with us. In 1 Corinthians Paul instructs us that time is short and we should live like that. He writes that when we use things in our everyday lives, we should not get to attached to them because they won’t last.
1 Corinthians 7:31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
1 John 2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
A good way to measure your attachment is to answer this question:
Is there anything in your life that you would not easily give up if the Lord asked you to give it up today?
We all have affections in our lives, that is natural. The key is keeping them in their place; Never giving anything a higher priority or place than Jesus. We have all read the verses multiple times, but we can’t ignore them, we need to address our affections from time to time. We must assess our hearts and our priorities. It might be easier to prioritize properly if we remember that time IS short. If we keep our minds and eyes on the prize, it is easier to put things in their proper perspective.
There is an old song: Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.
We need the things of this earth to grow dim. We need to be mesmerized by the Light of the World, Jesus, so that we see how puny, simple and temporary these things of earth really are in the grand scheme of things.
Store up treasures in heaven, not on earth. Why does it matter? Because your heart will be where your treasure is!
Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
If we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will take care of US!
Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
What does it mean to delight yourself in the Lord? Make Him the center of your life, Make Him what you desire most, chase after Him and seek Him more than you seek the stuff in this world. Seek Him with all of your heart. You can hang your hat on His promises; they will stand forever true. So, try it out. Delight yourself in Him and see what He does!
Jesus, you know I have a long way to go to be who you created me to be. Forgive me for my affections for the things of this world. Help me to make you my top priority. I want to delight in you. Help me to seek you with all of my heart. Thank you for not giving up on me when I get distracted. Thank you for your love, help me to really understand your love more each day.
Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
