December 20 Devotion
The new year is fast approaching. Some are already proclaiming their New Year Resolutions. “After the holidays, I’m going to…” or “After the New Year, I will…” Sound familiar?
My challenge to you is: Start Today! Don’t wait. It is a matter of thinking/attitude. It stems from the fact that we tend to think that we have a big hurdle to jump over before we become worthy/good enough/able to be used by God. When in fact, it is really a one day at a time, one moment at a time approach. When we see big chunks of time or big goals, we get discouraged and give up the first time we are not successful/fall off the wagon/eat something we shouldn’t/ or skip our workout, etc.
Sure, maybe we have a big goal, but we work on it one day at a time, realizing that some days will be a small step backwards, or not progress in either direction, but that does not need to derail us.
Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Too much focus on tomorrow can not only overwhelm us but can cause us to miss out on what God has for us in that moment. Jeremy Camp has a great song “Keep Me In the Moment.”
God is called “I AM.” He is the Great I Am. If we can keep this in mind maybe it will help us with our approach to life.
Exodus 3:13-14 “Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
I think this is one of the most profound titles for God, it is perpetual. Today He is I AM, tomorrow He will be I AM, next week He will still be I AM. So, as you approach whatever it is that you were going to set as your future resolution, do two things differently this time. First, bring that future resolution into the present, start today, start this minute. Second, bring I AM into the situation.
Ask the Great I AM, to help you. Ask I AM to help you be in the moment, one moment at a time. Don’t throw the whole holiday season out the window, take it one day at a time, one meal at a time, one moment at a time. It is time to already be who God created you to BE, today’s version of it, not the complete project or masterpiece. You are a work in progress, be that today. Everyday we are somewhere along the process of sanctification, we don’t have wait until His work in us is done before we are useful. Start today! Be who I Am created you to BE TODAY!
