AUGUST 14th
Are you listening?
God is speaking…but are you listening? Remember the story of Elijah wanting to hear from the Lord…
1 Kings 19:11-12 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
God was not in the powerful wind or the earthquake or the fire. He was in the whisper. We have to lean in to hear Him. We have to quiet ourselves and all of the “chatter” that our brains, our bodies, and the world around us are throwing at us.
Why a whisper? I think because it is intimate. I think because we have to lean in to hear Him. I think because He really wants us close to Him. I think because although He is the unfathomable, all powerful, almighty Creator of the Universe that could annihilate us with just His thoughts, He wants us to know that He is also reachable and wants to connect. He is a gentle, loving Father who cares about us and wants us not to be afraid to draw near to Him. He craves connection with us. And for those who are willing to draw near, He whispers to our hearts.
James 4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…
Isaiah 55:3 Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.
Psalm 78:1 O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your ears to what I am saying
Today, let’s quiet ourselves and listen to what God is speaking to us.
Father God, thank you for your love. Thank you for wanting to connect with me. Thank you for whispering to me. Help me to draw near to you and tune in to your voice. Help me to set aside my own thoughts and agenda or plan for the day and take time to hear you. Thank you for your plan for me.
